A beloved fixture on the alt-indie scene, Brooklyn-born and based They Might Be
Giants was founded twenty somethin' years back by John Flansburgh and John
Linnell. With nonstop performances, videos, podcasts, and television work
already filling their schedule to the bursting, TMBG recently added a
Grammy-winning kids’ project to their multitalented roster.
TMBG’s legions of fans might recognize the band’s distinctive sound in the theme
for the hit TV show Malcolm in the Middle, for which they won their first bona
fide Grammy award in 2002. The band got raves for its recording of the Bob
Mould’s (of Hüsker Dü fame among others) theme for The Daily Show With John
Stewart, and wrote and recorded all the bombastic orchestral music for the show
with their bombastic orchestral friends.
The band now includes Dan Miller, Danny Weinkauf and Marty Beller, and they are
often joined by the Tricerachops Horns: Dan Levine, Kurt Ramm and Stan Harrison.
Not one but two new TMBG releases are out this year, one being “The Else”
produced by The Dust Bros, NYC superstar Pat Dillett and the band. The other is
something just for the small fry, a DVD and CD set called "Here Come the 123s,”
for which TMBG garnered its second abovementioned Grammy, for Best Musical Album
for Children.
Rounding out the action for one of music’s most indefatigable acts this year is
an amazing array of new, old, rare, and unusual TMBG material on their free
podcasts for adults and kiddies.
